The Most Delicious Homemade Beef Penang Ever!

The Tourism Authority of Thailand kicked off Thai Restaurant week in Los Angeles April 11-17, 2016 with over 15 restaurants (Ayara Thai Cuisine, Night + Market, Jitlada are to name a few!) participating and offering special Songkran Festival (Thai New Year) dishes.

Special thanks to Jenn Infanto of Localite LA!

Songkran (April 13-15), the most famous festival in Thailand, is in keeping with the Buddhist/Hindu solar calendar and it signifies when the sun enters the sign of Aries the Ram.

I was lucky enough to get to try out the cooking class from Chef Nooror Somany Steppe from the Blue Elephant Cooking School in Phuket in Los Angeles at the New School of Cooking. She traveled all the way from Thailand to teach us this class!

One of my favorite dishes from the class was the Beef Penang. Although it’s recommended that you make the curry paste from scratch for the best results, if you use a prepackaged curry paste (Chef Nooror sells some under her own brand), it’s a quick and easy dish that can be finished in just about 15 minutes.

I was starving during the cooking class and almost fainted from hunger from the super delicious aromas of the fresh curry sauce

The class hosted a mini competition for the best looking and best tasting dishes in the class. We paired up in teams of two to compete with our beef penangs!

I teamed up with Pat from Eating LA and shockingly we won for best looking dish!

During the rest of the class we focused on dishes that were atypical from the dishes that Americans regularly have at their local thai dishes. The local Thai dishes that we are familiar with are actually mostly street foods, such as pad thai and pad see ew etc.

One of my favorite dishes that I am going to take home and cook was the Rose Egg roll. Named because of it’s unique way of wrapping the egg roll sheet. Alas I could not figure out how to do the wrapping but I will be making this dish as a regular egg roll at home!
